Food Storage - What You Need to Know

We know that food storage is the act of storing food for use at a later time.  Sometimes we store items temporarily that will be used quickly, such as an extra gallon of milk when it is on sale.  Other food items we might store for short term, like a case of canned green beans, will be used in a few months period of time and rotated through.  Other food items are stored for long term storage use, meaning you will only use those items if really necessary.

Why You Need Food Storage
Let’s first address the question of why you would need food storage.  There are several scenarios in which food storage, both short term and long term are important.  The first reason is natural disasters.  According to one German Insurance company there were about 800 natural disasters worldwide in 2013 and the numbers are not out for 2014.. Natural disasters seem to be steadily increasing.  In case of a natural disaster, preparing with food storage will be among one of the most important things.

Another reason to consider storing food for is economical impact, such as job loss or substantial income decrease…or even perhaps substantial food cost increase.  When food is stored for long term and you are hit hard financially then you can significantly decrease food spending by living off food storage.
A seemingly less likely scenario is an outside force causing a food shortage in your particular area.  Perhaps a natural disaster, pandemic, or national crisis impact a large enough region to severely limit resources into your area.
